The path of enlightenment is the pathway home. Those with more awareness can help guide us back to that source. We have a long history of putting “spiritual” teachers on pedestals as opposed to seeing them as our reflection. This leads to an unbalanced co-dependent relationship.

There was a time when I put female spiritual teachers on pedestals. My admiration for powerful women led to me doubting my own intuition. I would put on my rose colored glasses and deny the flaws I recognized within unbalanced perspectives. I did not want to accept the “Goddess” as being anything less than perfect. I would take everything being said as “truth” with a false confidence lacking discernment. Once I decided to take more responsibility for my own inner knowing, I broke the “guru” spell.

Allowing your intuition to be eclipsed by people you admire can lead to you being taking advantage of. This is the foundation of popular “cult culture.” If a teacher reacts with anger because you disagree with something being shared, this is a sure sign of dictatorship. More awareness should to lead to more freedom, not more restrictions and control. Heart based spiritual leaders will respect your choice of free will and allow you the space to come to your own conclusions. After all, experience is the greatest teacher.

The following are a few ways to recognize if your teacher is heart based.

• The Respect of Free Will: Does your teacher share without expectations of you resonating with the lesson? The truth does not need validation. The ego does.
• Soft Eyes: Does your teacher have a soft look within their eyes? The eyes reflect the lightness of the heart. The lighter the heart, the more aware the sage is.
• Honor and Integrity: Does your teacher walk with honor and integrity by treating everyone as a self reflection?

If we want to truly evolve as a collective, we have to let go of the “guru syndrome.” We put too much emphasis on looking outside of ourselves for the answers. A righteous teacher will always lead you back to self for inner discoveries that lead to a higher level of awareness. They will never be ashamed of sharing their stories of failure, disappointment and pain as well as their triumphs. Their teachings will supersede the concept of clinging to a infallible image. No one is perfect and being vulnerable and authentic is a reflection of that truth. The dismantling of spiritual pedestals will alleviate the common flaw of worshiping the messenger and lead more towards focusing on the messages that resonate instead.

The human mind has a tendency to both romanticize and complicate spiritual concepts. We confuse the beauty of insights written by Rumi, Osho and a host of other seers, as being an intellectual process. The modern indoctrination of linear-based learning comprised mainly of “memorization”, along with the dismissal of emotional processing, has lead to a clouded perspective. Emotional intelligence is the key to breaking down the wall that disconnects the heart and mind. When the heart and the mind merge, something magical happens. The open flow of energy within your aura becomes more efficient, and the essence of your soul begins to speak. Your expressions and responses to life’s situations transition from being “intellectual” to “ethereal.” The greatest artists, musicians, athletes, etc.. have all accomplished integrating this way of being, also referred to as entering ‘the zone’ or the ‘flow state’.

There are many examples of the ways this super-efficient ‘flow state’ impacts our environment and our lives. The Chinese philosophy of “Feng Shui” is a system that harmonizes a building or room to the surrounding environment’s Qi. Qi (pronounced “chee” in English) is a fluid, moving life force which plays an essential role in the philosophy. In feng shui as in Chinese martial arts, it refers to ‘energy’, in the sense of ‘life force’ The belief is that by honoring the flow of energy within your space, you increase your physical and emotional wellbeing.

So the question is, how is the Qi within your physical and inner world directly connected? Why is efficiency the key element to master along the road of your personal evolution?

We have all heard the cliché phrase “Your outer world reflects your inner world.” This statement is true and the following observation supports that revelation.

American culture thrives on debt in order to feed our obsession with consumption. As westerners, our status and self-esteem is based on the accumulation of money and goods. “Successful” members of society have expensive cars and large homes filled with gadgets, huge closets full of clothes and expensive furniture. We could describe this way of operating as a “clutter culture.” The flow of energy within this system is neither efficient nor balanced and therefore, this energetic imbalance becomes physically reflected. The current global crisis of violence, depression, drug usage, inflation and war confirm this analysis.

I would like to also use the following analogies to further explain how efficient energy flow is the key to peace and well-being.

• The repressed blood flow within clogged arteries can lead to a fatal heart attack.
• Repressing the flow of emotions like pain and fear without processing and releasing can lead to chronic anger and violent outbursts.
• Repressing the flow of emotions like sadness, guilt and shame without processing and releasing causes stress, which makes the body more hospitable to cancer and other diseases.

In fact, the root of any problem you can think of that causes suffering can be linked back to a blockage of some kind, causing an inefficient flow of energy. We can choose to observe imbalanced situations outside of our emotions and ask the following question:

“What needs to be removed in order to bring back harmony and efficient energy flow?”

The answer to that question will balance and harmonize the situation by decreasing physical and mental suffering.

The more your consciousness evolves, the fewer objects you will desire to have in your space. Your state of being will become increasingly expansive, taking up the space within and your inner world will crave the space it needs to expand outward exponentially.

To reach our greatest potential is to continually remove anything blocking the natural energetic flow within our minds, bodies and souls. Coming to a place of efficiency and simplicity within leads to deep contentment. Complexity is where suffering lies. Simplicity is where peace lies. When you remove complexities, you gain peace.

In our most natural states, we are the most powerful, as well as the most adaptable, the most observant, yet also the most vulnerable, susceptible, and malleable. While most can agree that a level of insecurity or discontentment is necessary for growth, the amount of time it takes for us to ascend to the next stage of growth is entirely a matter of choice. It is too common today that we simply settle for what’s comfortable, for what would hurt less, or be less stressful.

It is this stagnation that goes against the movement and change of the universe. If we still yet choose to see ourselves as a separate entity from the universe itself, then no matter how comfortable we are, life will still cause pain, stress, inconvenience, sorrow, and so on. At this point, while we still feel these pangs of growth, we can still yet choose to deny the reasons why we are experiencing them. We can choose to blame them on something other than the necessity of change. We can choose to belief these occurrences are but coincidence, and stay in stagnation.

Now, when we are identified with our current position in life, we still have this ruminating sense of separateness in the background, regardless of how much we may have learned about the higher-self, about ego, about humility, or about living. We can learn many, many things, but the end result remains that we are simply interested in the process of learning, as opposed to the subject in study. This can be related to the process of desire; it is less that we are interested in the satisfaction of desire then desire itself.

The more we learn, the more we identify with ourselves as the one who is learning or the one who is ‘gaining’ knowledge. The more knowledge we ‘gain’ the more allowance we have to speak as if we know something which someone else does not – but the fact is, we are merely admitting to ourselves that we have forgotten what we already know, that we deny the power that we have within us.  We admit to ourselves, by this process; that we are unable, that we are less than, that we have not, that we are not, and we ought to work like hell to be something the we aren’t, or gain something we don’t have.  We admit it and therefore, this construct of thought becomes our reality.

The truth remains that we cannot gain something we already have, nor can we become something we already are.

This admission is allowance if irresponsible behavior. We hold no accountability for ourselves or the state of our affairs. We would say, “This is just how I was raised,” or “I didn’t know any better,” or “It’s too difficult for me,” all the while perpetuating the illusion of separateness. While this list is certainly an abbreviation of the potentialities – this says, in truth, that, because of how we were raised, we don’t have to make certain choices. That, because the responsibility of knowing is too much, it’s better to simply make mistakes and be forgiven. This says that, because something requires more effort than we are comfortable exerting, its better to allow someone who is more willing to take on the task. These phrases we use to explain our inadequacy are not explanations, but excuses for our unwillingness to adhere to the twists and turns of the human experience.

This develops a sense of weakness on a deep subconscious level that is almost irreversible.

What is most interesting about this is that – in many cases – the more we might learn, the smarter we might become, we become susceptible to pride, lust, greed, willfulness, self-centeredness, and in some cases fear. All of these mask this sense of weakness, and can just as well exacerbate them.

We agree with ourselves that because we know something that others don’t or have a special title that others admire, that we are surely greater than those without such knowledge or prestige. This is still an admission of weakness – saying that being human in itself is not enough.

Now there are interesting, dualistic outlooks on the idea of weakness. We all have individual concepts of what it means. We might agree that physical strength is that which differentiates the weak from the strong. Some refer to one another’s intellectual abilities to discern weakness. There is also Willpower, Patience, Self-Control, Humility, Success, and many more; all of which shape the outer image of which others define you as. While one individual may find himself in a state of mind in which he feels weak, others may still look to him as strong. There are even those who say strength lies in the ability to accept or admit weakness.

Surrender, as some would call it, is not always looked upon as giving up, or quitting. Surrender can be realized as, not so much of the self, but of a mindset you once held so fervently. You as an individual have been defeated by your own stubbornness. As you stand, have cast yourself into a downward spiral of failure and remorse, and now knowing that the way you have been thinking, or behaving, no longer serves you in the way you believed it did – must give it up. The change that comes from this surrender may scare you – and that fear can very well develop into its own weakness, becoming the potentiality to fail overcoming it.

Fear will cripple you. Interestingly enough, The fear of weakness or failure can be just as debilitating as the desire to be strong. What motivates the desire to be strong better than the fear of being, or remaining, weak? You cannot separate these two ideas. And what is the desire to be strong other that the desire to be better than, to assume you are worthy or deserving of – and what does that give you but a yet greater sense of separation.

What I fear most, is that in this collective growth of consciousness, we find spiritual development as a strength, as something to be admired or worshiped, something that is achievable or attainable. In my personal understanding, Spirituality has it’s foundation in humility; in the ability to be humble, and not use it as a personal endeavor for grandiosity.

So now, with this broad idea of what weakness may be, I present you with something a bit closer to the reality of it;

The idea or the necessity to be stronger, more successful, or more loving and caring, or more calm and composed – or more happy and accepting if you chose to see strength that way – is absolutely opposed to the virtue itself. To say I need to be greater, faster, smarter, kinder, happier – completely discredits the current state of yourself. You, in your current state, in your most natural state – without carrying the past in your memories, without feeding hopes to your future – here and now, you are what strength attempts to define itself as.

EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

So many of us were taught conditional love. We have believed for most of our lives that we have to earn love in order to be deserving. We may have felt that we needed to look a certain way, act a certain way, or change some aspect of who we are in order to fit in or be accepted. I have found that at a core level some of the deepest emotional scars have come from not feeling good enough, not feeling accepted for who we are, or some other expression of not fully loving and accepting ourselves. This can escalate into an even more advanced fear of truly not feeling safe in the world. This type of belief or thought form can stay deeply embedded in our unconscious mind and work to continuously undo all of the hard work we have done to build a life that matches our highest intention. In order to truly soar into our purpose and to fulfill our dreams we need to examine our core emotional needs. Many times those of us on a spiritual path end up focusing on areas such as raising our consciousness while ignoring the deeper wounds of our emotional body. In my personal experience, as well as in working with clients, I have found this area to be the most often ignored. Yet I believe that healing our emotions is one of the most amazing ways of tapping into a well of infinite power and inner strength. I am sharing a video that I made that speaks to how to use the power of our emotion well being to break free from the confines of external programming and the system of outside influence. INNER SMILE

In case you don’t know Chinese medicine believes there is a connection between your organs and emotions.  By simply giving your organs mindful attention and filling them with more healthy energy such as smiling and breathing (more oxygen and blood flow), you are in effect shifting emotional garbage trapped in your organs.  I can honestly say it does work. The following is a simple explanation as to the emotions linked to your main organs.

1: Smile into your liver and dissolve anger:

Smiling into your liver can not only help dissolve anger and resentment but greatly assist with the decision making process.  Allow yourself to forgive, accept and feel kindness.

2: Smile into your kidneys and dissolve fear:

Feel safe, secure and protected in life again.  Breathe a smile into your kidneys, feel them soften on the inhalation and release fear and stress on the exhalation.

3:  Smile into your lungs and dissolve sadness or depression:

Fill your lungs on the inhale and totally empty them on the exhale.   Allow fresh new air to fill your lungs as you inhale the smiling energy.  Feel them relax and release any feelings of sadness and depression.

4:  Smile into your stomach and dissolve anxiety:

The stomach can often be a place where we hold lots of worry.  Smiling into your stomach can greatly help bring you into the present moment releasing worry and anxiety about the past and future.  Continue breathing the smiling energy into your stomach until it feels totally relaxed. A relaxed stomach means improved digestion and a calmer you.

5: Smile into your heart and dissolve hate and impatience:

Smiling into your heart can help shift cruelty, hurt, hate and impatience.  Feel your heart fill with joy, kindness and compassion with each breath cycle.

6:  Smile into any body part:

Of course you can enjoy a quick 5 minute smiling break by breathing into any part of your body that is overworked, fatigued or stressed. Smile into your eyes if they are tired.  Smile into your jaw if you are clenching your teeth.  Smile into your shoulders if they are hunched and tight.  Smile into your feet if they are tired.  A smile encourages you to soften, release and improve energy flow.

These and many more are the techniques that I teach my clients that lead to profound life changing emotional healing.
